Do You Know the Wine Growing Region of Lodi?

What do you know about the wine growing region of Lodi? It is probably America’s largest wine growing region. Yet, a lot of people know nothing about this region. Or they think the wine from here ends up in larger ‘jug wine’ and not fine wine.

Where Is It Located?

Most of the wine growing region of Lodi is east of Interstate 5 between Sacramento and Stockton in California’s Central Valley. The Lodi AVA western part lies close to the edge of the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and the eastern boundary runs parallel with the Sierra Foothills.

Isn’t Lodi Too Hot to Grow and Make Good Wine?

Not at all. Lodi is actually blessed with a moderate Mediterranean style climate. This is due to the many rivers which run through here. And the Delta, a huge maze of waterways, offers large temperature drops at night. The Grapes grown here enjoy the benefit of cooling water, air, and river breezes.

The cooling influence contributes to a good balance between ripeness and acidity that keeps the wines fresh. Some parts of the wine growing region of Lodi are closer to the Delta and are much cooler. Days are still warm, creating good conditions for full-flavored red wines.

What is the Soil Like?

This is great soil for producing quality wines, not just bulk wines. This mineral-rich, free-draining, sandy clay soil is what helps the grapes here become the basis for great wines.

What Red Grapes Are Grown Here?

In the wine growing region of Lodi, the world’s oldest Cinsault vineyard is here. With 25 acres of this varietal in the Bechthold Vineyard planted in 1886 by Joseph Spenker, it is still growing on its own roots.

You will also find Carignane, Southern Rhone red, Cinsault, and of course Zinfandel.

What White Grapes Are Grown Here?

In the wine growing region of Lodi, you might be surprised to learn many white wine grapes do very well here. Spanish, Italian, German, and Burgundian taste magnificent from this area.

Acquiesce Winery, where founder Sue Tipton only makes white wines. And roses. She says the climate in Lodi is very close to that in the Southern Rhone with only a two-degree difference in temperature. That’s perfect for wines like Grenache Blanc, Picpoul Blanc, Riesling, Gruner Veltliner, Gewurztraminer, Dornfelder, Albarino, and more.

What Are Some of My Favorites?

I love the style of Acquiesce. Crisp, flavorful white wines like her Ingénue blend of Grenache Blanc, Clairette Blanche, Bourboulenc, and Picpoul Blanc please my palate with delicate florals, savory mineral and herb notes, and citrusy brightness.
